Edward T. Sanford

Edward Terry Stanford was born on July 23, 1865 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was educated first at the University of Tennessee, from whence he graduated with his A.B. and Ph.B degrees in 1883. He then continued on to Harvard, obtaining his A.B. (1885), A.M. (1889) and LL.B.(1889). He obtained an additional honorary LL.B. from the University of Cincinnati in 1908. Sanford began practicing law in Knoxville in 1890. He quickly garnered a reputation as an excellent practitioner, known particularly for his chancery and appellate cases. Sanford was appointed U.S. assistant Attorney General in 1907, and was made U.S. district judge of Eastern and Middle Tennessee the following year. In 1923, with the support of Chief Justice William Howard Taft, Sanford was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. He served for 7 years, writing a total of 130 opinions. He was known particularly for his talent for interpreting difficult or confusing statutory or procedural matters. He died suddenly on March 8, 1930 in Washington, D.C., and is buried in Knoxville, Tennessee.
