Judge Charles G. Neese served as judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee for 21 years. On Thanksgiving Day, 1961, after recommendations by Senator Estes Kefauver and Albert Gore Sr., President John F. Kennedy appointed Judge Neese to this position. Prior to this, Charles Neese served as executive assistant to the Governor in 1944 and administrative assistant to Senator Kefauver from 1949-1951.
This collection contains personal documents of Judge Neese, which include correspondence with family and associates, newspaper articles, photographs, and scrapbooks that reflect Judge Neese's work and accomplishments. Further, this collection includes speeches delivered to various organizations and material written by Judge Neese describing the history of Tennessee government. Also, there are copies of Judge Neese's two manuscripts, "Amazing Race" and "Estes was Bestes."
