Henry Horton (1866-1934) was a Democratic governor of Tennessee from 1927-1933. Prior to serving in that office, he was in the State House for one term and was then elected to the Senate in 1927, where he became Speaker of the Senate. He assumed the office of the governor when Austin Peay died unexpectedly, and was elected again in 1928 and 1930 with the help of Nashville investor and former State Senator Luke Lea. Although Horton expanded Peay’s road building program and created the eight-month school year, he is best remembered for the charges of corruption leading back to Lea that nearly led to his impeachment. He died of a probable stroke in 1934.
